The Germans wind energy industry and its suppliers have for a number of reasons become a strategic issue in German, and especially Schleswig-Holstein, industrial policy.
The centre of excellence for wind energy (CEwind) was set up between 2005 and 2008 (Phase I), initially
as a joint project of the universities and research establishments in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, financed through the Innovation Fund of the what was formerly the Schleswig-Holstein ministry of economic affairs and transport (MVV).
Work was started on Phase II in order to ensure sustainability and the conversion of research results into useable applications, subject to the condition that a corporation under public law was formed for this purpose. Phase II was financed as part of the Schleswig-Holstein state business development plan (Zukunftsprogramm Wirtschaft) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Meanwhile almost all the Schleswig-Holstein universities and research establishments have joined the newly established research cooperative (CEwind eG), along with their specialist professors and scientific assistants involved in wind energy research.
CEwind’s goal is to deal with wind energy issues in a practical, comprehensive, scientific and interdisciplinary matter. The university partners bring their know-how into CEwind, and combine their resources in order to strengthen regional economic power in the sense of technology transfer.
The most important missions include the expansion of CEwind’s research work, and in particular a close dovetailing between universities and businesses, the systematic networking of all scientific skills and capacities in the area of wind energy research in Schleswig-Holstein, as well as the training and further training of highly qualified specialists. CEwind’s very diverse scope of responsibility also includes consultancy work, preparation for establishing spin-off companies, and cooperation projects nationwide.
Under the auspices of CEwind, research is currently being carried out on 10 innovative and application-oriented challenges in collaboration with partners from industry. Here the main focus is on projects involving mechanical and electrical engineering, the energy industry, environment and information technology.
The individual R&D projects are oriented on the needs of the partners from industry, institutions and operators etc. At the same time, the centre should also play a role in creating the necessary research infrastructure in Schleswig-Holstein, and establishing a specialised area of research in Schleswig-Holstein that has relevance far beyond the region. Of central importance in achieving this is the interdisciplinary combination of engineering, natural and economic sciences.
The centre of excellence is open to other partners from universities and research establishments in Schleswig-Holstein. What was initially a loosely organised research association is now a legally established, and consequently effective, cooperative named CEwind eG, whose diverse activities are centred on the field of innovative wind energy.
