The Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel was founded in 1665. It is the oldest and largest (about 21,000 students) university in Schleswig-Holstein and offers a wide range of courses. Its research strengths are in marine research and geo-sciences, molecular biology and medicine, health and nutrition, environmental research, economics and mathematics/informatics, surface technology and cultural studies.
Also in Kiel is the Kiel University of Applied Sciences, with about 6,000 students Schleswig-Holstein´s largest University of Applied Sciences. It offers an attractive range of practice-oriented courses in the fields of business, engineering, social work and agriculture. Its MA in multimedia is also very popular. The university´s activities abroad offer many opportunities for foreign study.

The University of Flensburg (about 4,200 students), which is located near the border with Denmark, is developing as a centre for teacher education in Schleswig-Holstein, offering a Bachelor in Teaching Sciences and a related Master course for qualified teachers. It also offers courses in cultural studies and in economic sciences in close cooperation with the University of Southern Denmark. The Master course in Sustainable Energy Systems and Management has gained an international reputation.
Flensburg University of Applied Sciences originates from a School of Steamship Machinists founded in 1886 for the training of ship operation engineers. Approximately 3,000 students are enrolled in courses in the fields of business and technology. The focus of teaching and research in technology is on energy and communications technologies, applied mathematics, computer aided mechanical engineering, media informatics and biotechnology. The close cooperation with the industry gives you excellent opportunities for practical approaches during your studies.
The West Coast University of Applied Sciences (about 800 students) in Heide enjoys a very distinctive profile, offering courses in international tourist management, business and law, management and technology and also industrial automation. It also offers business management with specialization in banking and taxation and electrical/information engineering. Due to the University´s manageable size and campus atmosphere, you will find it easy to get in touch with your professors and fellow students.
Nordakademie was the first private university to be founded. The wide range of optional courses in the field of Business Management with lectures on corporate practices, semesters abroad, excursions and seminars held in foreign languages offer students numerous opportunities for consolidation and specialisation.
